The Dragons had earned their first trip to the Convo since 2007 with a win over Western Latham and were looking for their first district tourney win since a 92-63 win over Belpre in 1988.Saturday’s match up turned out to be a good one, two fairly evenly matched teams battling to survive and advance. After an early West Union surge, the Panthers battled back and the second half turned into a back and forth thriller that came down to the final two minutes when the Panthers pulled away at the free throw line to end the West Union season and hand the Dragons a heartbreaking 53-50 defeat.“This is a great group of kids and they play as hard as they can every time,” said West Union head coach Austin Kingsolver in his postgame radio interview. “It was a tough, physical game tonight and we got contributions from a lot of kids and maybe we got a little gassed at the end. The kids bought in to our goals from the beginning of the year and these kids have just gotten stronger and better.”Often when teams come to the Convo, they get off to slow starts as they adjust to the surroundings of the wide open college floor and that was the case on Saturday as both teams struggled early on the offensive end, but the Dragons woke up first, getting back to back three-pointers from Bowan Tomlin and Ryan Rothwell plus a Conner Campbell free throw to take a 7-2 lead with 3:03 left in the first quarter. A three ball by Chesapeake’s Levi Blankenship cut the West Union lead to two, but just as quickly the Dragons dialed long distance once gain, this time getting back to back triples from Campbell and Rothwell to grab a 13-5 advantage. A late bucket by the Panthers’ Austin Jackson left the Dragons on top by six after one period of play. The Dragons got scores on their first two second quarter possessions, a two from Tomlin and a Brycen Staten free throw, but the Panthers seemed to finally found the range and a basket by Nathan Cox with four minutes left in the frame pulled his team to within 16-15 and while the Dragons hit a scoring drought, Chesapeake made it an 8-0 run and claimed a one-point lead.A Tomlin basket put WU back in front, but Chesapeake responded with a three-point play from big man Eli Archer and a three-point goal by Jackson and when the halftime break arrived, it was the Panthers taking the 23-20 advantage to the locker room. The pace picked up in period number three as the two teams combined to score 28 points and neither led by more than five over the eight minute span and that margin came when Archer scored the first bucket of the second half. The Dragons took over two minutes to score but got a basket by Clayton Madden and two Conner Campbell free throws to cut the Chesapeake margin to just one. For the remainder of the third frame, the game’s momentum shifted back and forth with the Dragons fighting back to tie the game at 29 on a layup in transition by Rothwell.Chesapeake bounced back to go up by four, but a nice hustle play on a steal by Campbell resulted in another Rothwell score and two Madden free throws tied the score again with 1:27 left in the third. The Dragons then reclaimed the lead on a stick back by Rothwell, but a “bucket and one” by Blankenship left the Panthers with a slim one-point lead as the fourth quarter rolled around. The final period began with a basket by Trent Dearth on the first Chesapeake possession, followed by a Zane Kingsolver bucket for the Dragons. The basket swapping continued with scores by Blankenship for the Panthers and Tomlin for the Dragons, then Archer for the Panthers and Madden for the Dragons to make it 42-41 Chesapeake with 3:35 to play.A minute later, a deuce by the Panthers’ Travis Grim gave his team a three-point lead but an ensuing three-point bomb by Tomlin tied the game at 44 with two minutes on the clock. That final two minutes, however, spelled doom for the Dragons as they watched the Panthers march to the free throw line and sink five of six to open up a 49-44 advantage with 46.5 ticks on the clock as time began to run out on the West Union squad.A Tomlin three ball kept the Dragons close, but two more from the stripe from Blankenship pretty much sealed the deal on a Dragon defeat. The final points of the West Union season came when Conner Campbell drilled a three-point shot with eight seconds left, but when the final horn sounded it marked the end of the road for the Dragons and their large contingent of fans on hand at the Convo as Chesapeake moved on to the district finals with the hard-fought 53-50 victory. In their final outing, the Dragons (13-12) placed three players, all seniors, in double figures, led by 15 points from Bowan Tomlin, with Conner Campbell adding 14 and Ryan Rothwell 10. Another senior, Clayton Madden, scored 6 in his final game as a Dragon. it was also the final time in the kelly green, gold, and white for senior Tanner Neal.“These seniors were in the eighth grade when I started coaching,” said Coach Kingsolver. “I’ve been very blessed to be part of that group of kids as they have grown and matured and I know they will do great things the rest of their lives”Chesapeake (15-10) was led in scoring by Eli Archer’s 17 points, with Levi Blankenship adding 12 as the Panthers moved on to face Adena in the Division III District championship game.West Union13 7 15 15 —50Chesapeake7 16 13 17 —53W.
